Bartlett’s Farm and Nourishing Nantucket

Bartlett’s is now proudly collaborating with two stellar local entities, the Pip & Anchor market on Amelia drive and the Nantucket Resource Partnership non-profit, providing Farm Grown eggs for their food security program Nourishing Nantucket.

Per the NRP website, the program is run by Pip & Anchor and fiscally sponsored by the Nantucket Resource Partnership; the program provides fresh, local produce to 80 food-insecure families each and every week.

According to FeedingAmerica.org, food insecurity is when people can’t access the food they need to live their fullest lives, when they don’t know where the next meal is coming from, or they lack access to enough nutritious food to sustain healthy physical and mental well-being. The main causes of food insecurity are poverty, unemployment and lack of affordable housing; many families struggle with the choice of paying rent or buying groceries. These issues affect 44 million Americans, including 13 million children; that’s 1 in 8 households across the country, food insecurity can be found in every single county in the United States.

Nourishing Nantucket produced a Food Insecurity report for Nantucket in 2022. Finding it likely that thousands of island residents are impacted by food security, and as many as 4 in 10 students on the island. Find the whole report on it, here.

We spoke with Pip & Anchor co-founder, Chris Sleeper, about the endeavor:

Pip & Anchor and island non-profit Nantucket Resource Partnership have built a food security program called Nourishing Nantucket. We build CSA style boxes of local, nutritionally dense food for 80 families a week; using as much food from local farms as possible. If we can’t get something on the island, we find farms just off island to help. Pip packs and distributes the boxes weekly and the program now feeds over 300 food insecure Nantucketers every single week of the year. It’s a full circle program that supports local agriculture, feeds our neighbors nutritious food, and is part of a better food system for the future.
Bartlett’s eggs will be in the homes of 80 families this week who usually have to make the difficult choice between buying food, paying rent, affording healthcare, or child care. We’d love to continue to grow this program to support more of our neighbors and that means more donations from our islanders and visitors who have the means to support!

Here on the Farm, we are no stranger to keeping it local and helping out your neighbor. To put it plainly, we are STOKED to be a part of the solution here. We hope to expand on the project in the future to provide more farm-fresh, nutrient-dense, certified organic foods to our neighbors who need it most.
