DIY Terracotta Ollas

In today’s world, sustainability and water conservation are more important than ever. If you’re an avid gardener or someone interested in reducing water waste, you may have come across the concept of using terra cotta ollas for irrigation. Ollas, traditional unglazed clay pots, are an excellent and eco-friendly way to efficiently water your plants while minimizing water loss. In this post, we will guide you through the process of creating your own DIY terra cotta ollas, helping you take a step towards a more sustainable garden.

Materials Needed:

Terracotta clay pots (unglazed)
Terracotta saucers (to match the size of pots)
Waterproof silicone sealant
Water-resistant ceramic sealer (optional)
Potting soil and plants

Step-by-Step Instructions (to make a one-pot Olla)

  • Choose the Right Size:
Select terracotta pots that match the watering needs and size of your plants. Depending on the plant’s requirements and the area you wish to irrigate, choose pots of various sizes.
  • Prepare the Pots:
Ensure that the clay pots you’ve chosen are unglazed, as glazed pots may not allow proper water permeation. If necessary, sand any glazed surfaces on the pots to remove the sealant.
  • Seal the Drainage Hole:
Using a waterproof silicone sealant, cover the drainage hole at the bottom of each pot. This prevents water from escaping too quickly, allowing it to slowly seep into the surrounding soil.

To make a two-pot Olla, simply stack two of the same-sized pots, rim to rim, and seal with waterproof silicone, leaving one drainage hole open at the top.

  • Bury the Ollas:
Dig a hole in the desired location within your garden or planter bed, ensuring it is deep enough to accommodate the entire pot. Place the olla in the hole, leaving the saucer slightly above ground level.
  • Leave the saucer unsealed to create an access point for adding water. This way, you can remove the saucer when needed, pour water into the pot, and then reattach the saucer as a lid to prevent evaporation. The saucer will act as a cover that can be easily lifted and put back in place, allowing you to maintain the water levels in the olla as necessary.
  • Plant and Fill:
Plant your desired vegetation around the olla, ensuring that the roots have access to the water reservoir. Fill the pot with water through the saucer, allowing the clay to absorb and slowly release moisture to the surrounding soil.
  • Monitor and Refill:
Keep an eye on the water levels in your ollas and replenish them as needed. The porous nature of the clay will help maintain consistent moisture levels, reducing the frequency of watering.

By creating your own DIY terra cotta ollas, you can contribute to water conservation efforts in your garden while fostering a more sustainable approach to irrigation. These simple yet effective clay pots can significantly reduce water waste and provide your plants with a consistent water supply. Embrace this eco-friendly watering technique and watch your garden thrive while minimizing your environmental impact.
